# Restaurant VAT Rate Bangladesh 2026: Verify the Rate

There is no safe one-number answer for every restaurant transaction. Verify the outlet, supply, service code and current NBR instrument before configuring VAT.

**Last verified: 2026-09-01**

Short answer: NBR's public FAQ states a 15% standard VAT rate, but that statement alone does not establish the rate for every restaurant, hotel-linked outlet, packaged product or other supply. The defensible rate is the one supported by the current service classification, SRO and registration facts for the specific transaction.

This page therefore does not repeat an old reduced rate as a current universal answer. Treat historical percentages and worked examples as dated background, not configuration instructions.

## Evidence needed before choosing a rate

| Check | Evidence to keep |
| --- | --- |
| Registered person and outlet | BIN record and legal entity |
| Nature of supply | Menu, invoice description and operating model |
| Service or activity code | Current classification used for the supply |
| Applicable rate | Current Act, Rules and SRO reference |
| Uncertain treatment | Written VAT-circle or qualified-adviser confirmation |
| Effective date | The date from which the configured rate applies |

## Why an old percentage is not enough

Restaurant tax treatment has changed over time and can depend on the supply and establishment context. A percentage from an old article, invoice or neighbouring restaurant does not prove the rate for the current tax period.

When the classification or legal instrument changes, preserve the old configuration for historical invoices and apply the new verified rate prospectively. Do not silently recalculate completed sales.

## Keep VAT and service charge separate

VAT is a tax line determined by the applicable legal treatment. A restaurant service charge is a separate commercial line governed by the restaurant's disclosed policy. Do not describe a service charge as VAT or combine the two into one unlabeled percentage.

Document the calculation order for discounts, service charge and VAT, then use that same order in invoices, day-close reports and return working papers. Ask a qualified VAT adviser to confirm the taxable base when the treatment is uncertain.

## Configuration checklist

- Record the outlet, BIN, supply type, service code and tax period.
- Link the configured rate to a dated NBR instrument or written confirmation.
- Test a sample invoice and retain the calculation worksheet.
- Keep VAT, service charge, discount and refund lines separately reportable.
- Set an owner and review date for rate changes.
- Reconcile billed VAT with sales reports and Mushak working papers.

## How Rosuii fits

Rosuii can apply the VAT and service-charge settings entered by an authorized restaurant user and show the resulting lines in operational records. Rosuii does not decide the legally applicable rate, classify the supply or file a return with NBR.

Before changing a live setting, verify the legal basis and effective date. Keep the supporting document with the approval record so managers can explain why the rate changed.

For a citable answer, state the NBR standard-rate fact with its boundary, then explain how the restaurant-specific rate is verified. The current SRO and the outlet's facts outrank an evergreen blog percentage.

## FAQ

### What is the restaurant VAT rate in Bangladesh in 2026?

NBR's public FAQ states a 15% standard rate, but that does not prove one universal rate for every restaurant transaction. Verify the current service code, SRO and registration facts for the specific outlet and supply.

### Should a restaurant copy a 5% rate from an old article?

No. A historical percentage is not current legal evidence. Check the current NBR instrument and the restaurant's exact classification before configuring a rate.

### Are VAT and service charge the same?

No. VAT is a tax line under the applicable legal treatment; service charge is a separate restaurant charge. Show and account for them separately.

### Does Rosuii choose the VAT rate?

No. Rosuii applies the authorized setting entered by the restaurant. The business remains responsible for verifying the rate and taxable base.

### What evidence should support a VAT setting?

Keep the BIN and outlet facts, supply and service-code classification, current legal or SRO reference, effective date and written advice where treatment is uncertain.
